High Level Bridge - Before/After

High Level Bridge - Before/After

This is the High Level Bridge in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

I had to go a long ways to process this image. I metered off of the stone plaque display and hoped that wide bracketing would catch the extremes in the light sources.

BEFORE:
I used 7 bracketed images (+/- 0,2,4,6) and processed them through Photomatix to create an HDR image (BEFORE). Originally I took 9 images with 2 overlapping with others at the exact same exposures...so, I had to find out what each image was exposed for in order to separate them out before sending them into Photomatix for processing into an HDR.

AFTER:
I used "colour range" selections to take out the blue cast especially noticeable on the base of the stone display.
Increased overall colour on the A&B Channels in LAB Mode (Photoshop).

In LAB Mode I adjusted the Levels settings on the "lightness" channel to bring out true blacks in the image. As well on the Lightness channel I applied a slight "unsharp" setting to bring out fine details.

Topaz Adjust was used for denoising and adding detail.

A 50% gray layer was used to dodge/burn areas that would be darker or lighter in relation to the sunset.

As for the plaque I used a square shape on a new layer > filled it with white > used the warp tool to make it fit right over top of the metal plaque on the stone display. Once that was set up I set the layer to "overlay" and played with a blur setting and adjusted the opacity down....all in an effort to make the plaque standout so that you can read it better.

WHAT DID I LEARN?
I think next time I would set the bracketing 1 stop apart instead of 2 in order to get a smoother transition of tones and increase the quality of the HDR starting image.

PLAQUE SAYS...
If you did not catch the explanation of this bridge from the single "After Image"...here is what the plaque says about this bridge:

"Rising 307 feet from the valley floor. This bridge over which runs the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crowsnest Pass spans the valley in one mile and forty seven feet. Completed in 1909, it is the longest, highest bridge of its type in the world"

WHAT DO YOU THINK? AS I LOOK AT THIS IMAGE NOW IT LOOKS A LITTLE OVER-JUICED ON THE SATURATION ????????

Best viewed big. working sketch for post grad project. A sort of Axonometric through the window/fenestration elements, incorporating Trombe wall for thermal mass and controlable louvres to filter light levels and amount of solar gain to thermal mass.
